Senior Scientist - Flex Medical Solutions

FlexMedical Solutions provide contract design, development and manufacturing services to medical device OEM's from our site in Livingston.

The business is going through a phase of exciting expansion and we are seeking a Senior Product Development Scientist to join our tight-knit team and play an active role in the company's development. This senior role will bring hands-on, technical expertise to the business and use laboratory techniques to formulate customer solutions whilst being responsible for the management of the technical work of the team.

The role is a varied scientific role day-to-day, involving customer interaction, project management, product and process design and development. As a qualified scientist, having gained experience in a laboratory, you will understand in-vitro diagnostics and may have some specific experience in reagent development and common assay detection methods.

Your time will be spent working on some of our customer specific contracts (developing and manufacturing diagnostic products on their behalf), and also working on internal development programmes.

Key Responsibilities


Reporting to the CSO, you will: -


  • Build reagents / formulate customer solutions to their requirements.
  • Develop and design electrochemical and reagent methods for external customer
  • requirements, and internal development programs where required
  • Develop sensor functionalization methods, and sensor build processes to ensure rapid,
  • consistent, and precise sensor production for development programs.
  • Author, oversee and execute R&D protocols and reports, ensuring compliance with the
  • documentation requirements within the GLP environment.
  • Develop product and process technical documents to successfully introduce new products
  • and processes into manufacturing.
  • Design, execute and report lab experiments in support of external client projects and internal
  • development programmes.
  • Communicate effectively with sub-contractors, suppliers and customers

Desirable Technical Skills

  • Have competency in the use of modern manufacturing equipment (e.g. lasers, dispensing,
  • lamination & assembly) and metrology equipment such as CMM
  • Have experience in the use of 2D/3D CAD software such as Solidworks and AutoCad
  • Understand Design for Manufacture (DFM) methodology.
  • Experienced using statistical tools such as Minitab, and understands Design of Experiments
  • methods.
  • Experienced in reagent chemistry as applied in IVD products.
  • Experienced in surface chemistry: modification and analysis.
  • Experience in microfluidic devices
  • Personnel management
  • Project management
  • Understand Good Manufacturing and Good Laboratory Practices (GxP)
  • The ideal candidate will have worked to ISO13485 and 21 CFR Part 820 and will be familiar with product and process validation.
