Development Engineer

I have an exciting opportunity for a Development Engineer to join a global leader in the design and manufacture of electronic instruments within medical devices, telecommunications, optical communications, defence and scientific sectors.

This Scottish business is growing rapidly and is seeking a Development Engineer to join their R&D team and report directly to the Head of Technology.

The role is within the Technology Acquisition Team, with responsibility for the development of future transformational manufacturing and metrology capability. The successful candidate will be part of a collaborative effort to design or procure component subsystems and integrate those subsystems into the new generation of manufacturing and metrology capability.

Job Duties and Responsibilities

  • Contribute to the identification of new equipment and processes to improve manufacturing and metrology capability and performance.
  • Provide expertise in manufacturing system design and development (process design, system control, etc.) within internal and external initiatives:
  • Initiate, manage and participate in internal projects that generate new, or improve existing, manufacturing capability and performance.
  • Provide support for existing company equipment and processes.
  • Any other activities as may reasonably be required by the line manager from time to time.

Required qualifications and experience

Essential requirements:

  • 2+ years’ industrial experience in a high technology sector, ideally optics related
  • Proven experience in one or more of Systems Design, Mechatronics, Machine Control or similar, with an emphasis on manufacturing
  • Project delivery experience in a commercial environment.
  • Good verbal and written communication skills.
  • A Master’s degree (or equivalent) in Physics, Engineering or Optics/Lasers or a related field, or equivalent industrial experience

Desirable requirements:

  • Development of laser material processing or aligned technologies
  • Experience with ultra-short pulse laser material processing
  • Experience with manufacturing method complimentary to laser material processing
  • Industry/commercial experience, understanding of business requirements in high-tech manufacturing (e.g. optics, semiconductors)
  • Report, documentation, or business writing skills with strong attention to detail.
